Schroth Method Therapy - Marco Litto, Schroth Therapist

The Schroth Method is a conservative approach for the treatment of scoliosis and other abnormal curvatures of the spine.

Schroth Method Therapy by Marco Litto

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine that causes structural changes on all anatomical planes. 80-90% of all scolioses are “idiopathic”, which means that, to date, cause and pathogenesis have yet to be fully explained. A scoliotic curve is defined “functional” if it can be compensated and improved, or “structural” if it cannot be compensated.

The aim of the Schroth Method is to de-rotate, elongate and stabilise the spine in a three-dimensional plane and its programmes can benefit patients of all ages, regardless of the severity of the scoliosis. Each programme is tailored to the patient’s specific needs and usually includes:

An initial assessment to analyse the posture and flexibility, to establish the presence, degree and progression of any spinal alterations, and to discuss the most appropriate treatment plan

Postural awareness and corrections, especially with regards to activities of daily living, to prevent the curvature from worsening

Three-dimensional breathing exercises to help de-rotate and re-balance the tension around rib cage and surrounding tissues

Corrective physical exercises to address and improve the asymmetries and muscles imbalances around spine, shoulder and pelvic girdles

Daily home-exercises to complement and support the work done under supervision
